Crabtree-Ironduff Volunteer Fire Department was formed after a McElroy Oil delivery truck
burned in front of Duckett's Store on NC 209 in late 1972.
Residents of the community organized the department chartering it on May 7, 1973, later buying
property from the county government adjacent to the old Crabtree Elementary School. There they built their fire station.
The department operated seven years on donations --including trucks, equipment and cash --and
fund raisers.
